Descripción
The Buddha sits in the classic posture known as virasana; his hands, resting in his lap, form the common meditation gesture, the dhyana mudra. Vira means courageous, and asana is Sanskrit for posture.

We do not sense so much the boon-bestowing mildness of a heavenly savior, manifesting himself in a bliss-yielding vision, as the psychic reality and experience of the solitary spiritual conqueror, the highest type of man according to ancient Indian conception, is rendered tangible here in a bodily manifestation of calm, indomitable will, unflinching in its determination and supreme in its attained clarity - these being the fundamental traits of the spiritual victor. This composition offers no distracting sensual charm. Indeed it is intended to present a portrait-model of the Buddhist spiritual superman as he would appear on the earthly plane. Some of these ideals are those of Hinayana asceticism, which demands and expects everything from the relentless soul-force and self-control of the individual. The hands are thus in the "posture of inward absorption," popularly known as the dhyana mudra and symbolizing the attainment of spiritual perfection.

On the reverse side, below Shakyamuni's seat is carved Tibet's most holy mantra, namely Om Mani Padme Hum. This can be seen in the accompanying image.
