The Great Buddha
Shakyamuni here wears a shawl whose volume is articulated by shallow striations inlaid alternatively with copper and silver. The same inlay extends over the reverse of the sculpture too. He stand erect on a lotus pedestal.
The figure of the Buddha is deftly moulded, what with his slim hands and delicate fingers. His right hand makes the gesture of charity (varada mudra) and the left holds the gathered ends of his shawl at the left shoulder. He has a youthful face with introspective eyes lined with silver. The long ears are symbolic of his once princely status when he used to burden his ears with heavy ornaments. The silver mark, between his bowlike coppery eyebrows, represents his enlightened status.
