The exhibition Indian Popular Culture: 'The Conquest of the World as Picture' offers a critical viewing of the role played by Popular India Imagery of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the construction of Cultural, Social and National identities. It shows how the electicism of visuality resulting from a facilitated seizure of aesthetic and cultural meaning.

About the Author:

Jyotindra Jain, until recently Director of Crafts Museum, New Delhi, is Professor at the School of Arts et Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. A former Alexander-von-Humboldt Fellow, a Homi Bhabha Fellow, and Visiting Professor at the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard University, he is the author of: Kalighat Painting: Images from a Changing World; Ganga Devi: Tradition and Expression in Mithila Painting; and Other Masters: Five Contemporary Folk and Tribal Artists of India, Prof. Jain is a recipient of Prince Claus Award for his contribution in the field of art history and cultural studies.
